Status

Coming in these days: Hybrid HD from Seagate. Goal: Updgrade old Tablet PC HP TC 4400 from 7200 SATA HD to hybrid HD and SSD to compare performance and recommend (or not) to upgrade a five year old Tablet PC (which actually is running Windows 7 SP1 x64 and Windows 8 Developer Preview with 4 GB RAM just fine)

On site: Fujitsu Q550 Tablet with Windows 8 Developer Preview. Lack of decent CPU leads little use. External display with low resolution.

Sent back: Acer Iconia Tab W500. Tried it with Windows 7 and Windows 8 (Dev Preview), good concept, needs better hardware (case must become smaller and lighter, needs Windows 8 to be released, docked scenario not standing stable on table).

Warnschuss von Acer: Cebit 2010 “könnte die letzte Chance sein, eine Weltmesse der IT zu bleiben”

Die Cebit ist krank, vielleicht sogar todkrank. Wichtige Hersteller kommen nicht mehr, wichtige Neuerungen werden anderswo vorgestellt (CES, MWC, IFA), ein Sammelsurium an Themenveranstaltungen soll den Business-Charakter unterstreichen, zugleich werden in diesem Jahr hunderte bis sogar tausende Freikarten verjubelt.

Nun hat Acer einige Statements des deutschen Geschäftsführers Stefan Engel versendet. Dazu gehört zu erwartendes Lob, dass die Cebit “wichtige Plattform für Beziehungsmanagement” sei und der in der Tat erfolgreiche Planet Reseller der “ideale Ausstellungsbereich” für Acers Fachhandelskontakte sei. Doch Engel lässt auch einen deutlichen Warnschuss los:

„Mit der Planung einer konzeptionellen Weiterentwicklung will die CeBIT einen neuen Weg einschlagen. Wir sind auf die Veränderungen sehr gespannt. Es könnte die letzte Chance sein, eine Weltmesse der IT zu bleiben.“

Acer: Acquiered E-TEN, will have UMPC this year

News from Cebit: Acer has aquired E-TEN and will enter the handheld and ultra mobile devices market. When asked (by me) what their answer to the Asus Eee-PC will be, German director Stefan Engel responded that there will be an answer this year – no more details.

In the press release, Gianfranco Lanci, President of Acer Inc., simply states: „Acer will enhance the competitiveness in the ultra mobile segment, by combining PC and communication technologies.“

Acer quit the Tablet PC market two years ago after releasing some  big but too heavy convertible Tablets and an innovative but not that comfortable model and so unsuccessful products, the C301 and the C204.
