The new Multitouch enabled HP TouchSmart tm2 series convertible Tablet PCs, unveiled at CES beginning of January, can now be ordered from HP’s online shop, there called tm2t series, starting at a whopping 1,149 US-$. The price for the base configuration is currently rebated down to 949 US-$. HP estimates around 10 days for building and delivering a customized device. The Austrian press release says that the tm2 should be available in Austria until the end of February at 899 Euro.
The 12.1 inch multitouch LED display has a screen resolution of 1280×800 and is a BrightView glary display, no info about brightness. There also is no info how many fingers are supported. The predecessor tx2 recognizes four fingers. The screen can be twisted in both directions (according to the product photos) and folded onto the keyboard so that it can be used as slate Tablet. Strangely HP claims the tm2 would be “the world’s first multi-touch consumer tablet PC” – didn’t the HP tx2 exist before?!
HP offers two dual core CPUs, the 1.3 GHz Core 2 Duo SU7300 and the 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo SU9600, both with a TDP of 10 W. As for graphics you can choose between an internal Intel GMA 4500 MHD or a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550. The latter enables GigaBit LAN and is only available together with the SU9600. Both memory slots are accessible and be filled with up to 8 GB RAM in total. As HP only offers the 64 bit versions of Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional, you should go for 4 GB (2×2 GB). 2×4 GB RAM is still too expensive – but if you really need it…
HD sizes range from 160 to 500 GB, all with 7200 rpm. A DVD drive is not integrated, nevertheless the tm2 has a weight of around 2.15 kg, depending which configuration is chosen.
HP claims “up to 9.75 hours of battery life”.
Some HP software is pre installed, as part of the touch optimized HP software: Games like “DigiFish Dolphin“, which lets you interact with dolphins in a realistic 3-D view of the ocean”, and other applications called „Tug of Words“ and „Photo Hunt“. Corel’s Paint it! should be useful for painting with the fingers.
Ports, multimedia: 3xUSB 2.0, HDMI 1.3b, VGA, 5in1 media card slot, stereo speakers. A Fingerprint reader is optional.
Connectivity: WLAN (no details except being from Intel and supporting 802.11n-standard), 100 MBit/s LAN (while German specs says Gigabit!). Bluetooth and 3G are optional.
Targeting creative students HP offers on OEM of Native Instrument’s DJ software TRAKTOR DUO.
Pro: Multi touch, up to 8 GB RAM. aluminium case.
Con: No Arrandale CPUs, relativle heavy with a bit more than 2 kg. No USB 3.0.
