HP Mini 5012: HP’s first netbook with Touch support – with Win7 Home Premium in Germany

HP has unveiled its first netbook with touch screen option called HP Mini 5012. Target groups are “students and mobile professionals alike”.

The touchscreen supports multitouch gestures, finger taps and swipes while it is not clear if the touchpad also supports those gestures. It should be available in Germany in March, in the US this January. Interestingly the US datasheet (PDF) only mentions Windows 7 Starter Edition and XP Home as the primarily OSs, while the German product home page also lists Windows 7 Home Premium.
The HP Mini 5102 is powered by the new “Pinetrail” Intel Atom N450 processor and is offered with two screen resolutions for the 10.1-inch LED display. The display can’t be turned around (so this is not a convertible Tablet). HD content (720- and 1,080) playback is supported if an optional Broadcom HD video decoder is integrated. The “black anodized, brushed aluminum” case comes with a black, red or blue lid and an optional handle for throwing it away once you’ve got tired of the Mini.

HP promises up to 10 hours of battery life with the optional six-cell battery. The webcam (2 MP) software supports login via face recognition. Might be funny for kids but probably too slow for normal users. A hands on will tell.

The so called HP Student Edition includes the “Adobe Digital School Collection” which includes Photoshop Elements 8, Premiere Elements 8, Acrobat 9 Pro, Soundbooth CS4 and Contribute CS4 (this package cannot be found on the German page, though).
