English – Driver chaos on Wacom websites

Don’t trust Wacom if they say there is no new driver for you Tablet PC. Don’t trust their website if you think you’ve found it. Depending which site your are searching on and which OS you are looking for you get the wrong answer. Here you go, my odyssee:

Visit Wacom Americas English, the latest driver you get when looking for “Product Tablet PC” – OS XP or Vista is 5.05-7 from January. Nice, you get the same driver no matter if you look for XP or Vista. But wait, there is a European Wacom website -and we have a newer driver there.

Goto the Wacom Europe, choose German (or English), Download, Driver, choose Tablet PC as your product. You loose if you say XP Tablet PC Edition (a choice that is not avialable on the US site): you’re offered an old driver from back in 2006. But if you say Vista or XP or Windows 2000 (sic!) is your OS you get driver 5.08-2a RC from April 2008.

So, you are looking for a Wacom driver for your XP Tablet PC? Goto Europe, but choose XP, not Tablet PC. Sounds great? Wait, there is even more. The FTP-Server has ANOTHER driver in the 508 folder, 5.08-6 from beginning of May. And that one is not on the US nor the European websites (as far as I know). And it’s only on the US FTP server, not the European one. Aren’t Tablet PCs the same everywhere?

BTW, the benefits of the driver 5.08-2a RC “among smaller bug fixes and improvements” are, according to Wacom: Tablet sometimes lost the driver, better zooming with Painter Essentials 4.

The May driver 5.08-6 does not work on my Tablet (HP TC4400). “No supported tablet device found”…

Die meisten Tablet PCs sind mit der Stifttechnologie von Wacom ausgestattet. Wer seine Treiber vom Hersteller bezieht, bekommt meistens nicht mit, wenn Wacom die Treiber aktualisiert und neue Features hinzufügt oder für besser Kompatibilität mit neuen Anwendungen oder Betriebssystemen herstellt.

Allerdings macht es Wacom den Tablet-PC-Nutzern nicht gerade einfach. Zum einen können sie keinen RSS-Feed der Treiberseiten abonnieren, mit dem sie Updates einfach finden können. Und richtig chaotisch wird es bei den Treibern selbst. Wer nach XP-Treibern für seinen Tablet PC sucht, bekommt womöglich nur Uralt-Versionen angeboten.

Ein Beispiel von heute: Suche auf der deutsch- oder englischsprachigen Seite nach Tablet PC -> XP Tablet PC Edition führt zu Treiber 4.97-6 vom Herbst 2006. Suche ich aber nach Tablet PC -> Windows 2000(sic!)/XP oder Vista erhalte ich die Version 5.08-2a RC von Ende April 2008.

Ähnlich merkwürdig geht es auf den nordamerikanischen Wacom-Seiten zu: Auf der Download-Seite Tablet PC und Windows XP oder Windows Vista (XP Tablet Edition wird hier nicht separat angezeigt) auswählen und das Ergebnis ist ein Treiber 5.05-7 von Januar 2008. Dort ist die neueste Version also noch gar nicht angekommen… Die neueste? Oh, halt, auf dem FTP-Server liegt ja noch was aktuelleres, die 5.08-6. Aber natürlich nicht auf dem europäischen, sondern auf dem Server, auf den von den US-Seiten aus verlinkt wird… Chaos pur. Sind Tablet PCs nicht überall gleich?

Der Mai-Treiber 5.08-6 funktioniert auf meinem Tablet PC (HP TC4400) nicht, “keine unterstützte Hardware gefunden”…

Neuer Tablet-Bildschirm Belinea s.display 5_22 – 22 inch Tablet display from Belinea

English abstract: Belinea, sub of German PC manufacturer Maxdata, announces availability of 22 inch Tablet enabled display, recommended price is 999 Euro (1600 US-$). It’s a TN display with digitizer pen, 1680 x 1050 screen resolution and 300 cd/m2 brightness. Targeted audiences are designer, architects, schools, presenters.

Der von Belinea auf der Cebit im März vorgestellte Bildschirm s.display 5_22” mit Tablet-Funktion ist jetzt verfügbar. Der 22-Zoll-Bildschirm mit einer nativen Auflösung von 1680 x 1050 Punkten verfügt über ein nicht spiegelndes Display mit einer Helligkeit von 300 cd/m2 und einem typischen Kontrastverhältnis von 1000:1 (2500:1 dynamisch, alles Herstellerangaben), die Reaktionszeit liegt bei 5 ms und der Betrachtungswinkel bei 170 Grad.  Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung beträgt 999 Euro, der Straßenpreis ist etwa 100 Euro niedriger. Die ersten Händler melden Liefertermine für diese und nächste Woche.

Der Bildschirm ist mit 2mm starkem Sicherheitsglas (Härtegrad 7 nach MOH) ausgestattet, das nur 2% reflektiert und eine Lichtdurchlässigkeit von 95% hat. Der mitgelieferte Zwei-Tasten-Digitizers hat eine Druckempfindlichkeit von 1024 Stufen mit einer Auflösung von 1000 lpi (Linien pro Zoll) bei einer Übertragungsrate von 180 Punkten pro Sekunde. Die Erkennungshöhe beim Lesen liegt bei 15 mm, beim Schreiben bei 10 mm. Das Display lässt sich in um bis zu 90 Grad neigen und bis auf die Tischkante absenken. Der Anschluss an PC oder Mac erfolgt über USB sowie VGA oder DVI (inkl. HDCP). Die Leistungsaufnahme liegt zwischen 0,7 (Off) und 38 Watt.

Gegner Wacom Cintiq?

Laut Belinea eignet es sich insbesondere “für Präsentationen und andere Businessanwendungen”, und zwar “in Schulungs- und Seminarräumen oder Grafik- und Konstruktionsbüros” für das “digitale Skizzieren und exaktes Zeichnen” (Zitate aus der Pressemitteilung). Damit positioniert der Hersteller in einem gewissen Maße gegen die Cintiq-Displays von Wacom, die sich an den professionellen Zeichner und Grafiker wenden.

Sieht man sich die Preise und Spezifikationen des Wacom Cintiq 21UX an, so sind doch deutliche Unterschiede erkennbar. So hat das 21,3-Zoll-Display (Belinea s.display 5_22: 22 Zoll) einen Straßenpreis von etwa 2100 Euro (900), verfügt über eine Auflösung von 1600 mal 1200 Punkten (1680×1050) und die mit ebenfalls 1024 Druckstufen ausgestatteten Stifte haben eine deutlich höhere Auflösung von 5080 lpi (1000) bei einer Übertragungsrate von 200 Punkten pro Sekunde (180) und einer Lesehöhe ab fünf Millimeter (10). Die Helligkeit des Wacom beträgt nur 250 cd/m2 (300), die Reaktionszeit 30 ms (5).

Kurzeindruck

Auf der Cebit hat Belinea das s.display 5_22 bereits gezeigt und es hat die Standbesucher offenkundig stark interessiert. Das Schreiben und Zeichnen in Präsentation ist damit mühelos möglich, insbesondere im Zusammenspiel mit geeigneten Programmen und Betriebssystemen wie Powerpoint 2003 und 2007 und XP Tablet und Vista.

Zu sehen war in Hannover auch ein kleines Software-Werkzeug, mit dem sich per Klick am unteren Bildschirmrand die Windows-Fenster in mehreren Varianten verteilen und anordnen lassen. Diese Software sollte im Rahmen des Display-Launches zur Verfügung gestellt und auf jedem PC genutzt werden können, auch ohne das Belinea-Display. Ein Downloadlink ist aber noch nicht bekannt.

Apple: Another step towards a Tablet Book

When will we see a MacTablet? Apart of decent hardware you need ink enabled OS and applications, decent handwriting recognition and a killer app.

MacGadget links to an Apple job description in which Cupertino searches for a “Handwriting Recognition Engineer” who shall be “responsible for advancing Apple’s handwriting recognition technology for Mac OS X”.

The technology “may extend beyond Mac OS X to other applications and the iPhone”.

Some months ago it was reported that Asus is helping Apple to create a Mac Tablet. I blogged about that here but have not heard any news since then.

The news would be really exciting if Apple is seeking for more than just one new engineer for their Handwriting Recognition team. With the iPhone you have OS X and a touch screen. Adding a pen it would be easy e.g. to save short notes or new contacts hand written, convert them to text and synch with your Mac. But that alone wouldn’t enable all the great things you can do with a Tablet PC. Nevertheless this is another step in the right direction :)

I should have mentioned that Axiotron has already modded a MacBook into a TabletMac called Axiotron Modbook. Price is high but OK price, esp. regarding the current Euro/Dollar relation (around 1800 Euro including 2.4 GHz CPU, 250 HD and 4 GB RAM). In a forum thread several users report that they can use ink under Parallels (or Fusion) in virtualized Windows XP and Vista after installing the Wacom driver and of course under Boot Camp Windows. Downside: Weight of 2.5 kg (5.5 pounds). No European resellers yet, but the US shop ships worldwide.
