Update on Windows 7 support for Fujitsu (Siemens) tablets

Fujitsu will not offer updated BIOS versions for some Tablet PCs, other than stated before (see previous blog post).

This change is reflected in this PDF document about Windows 7 support, version 3, (dated Nov. 19th 2009).

Wording has changed from “supported” to “limited support” for following Lifebooks: P1610, P1620, T4220.

Full support is still true for T1010, T5010, STYLISTIC ST6012.

To get Windows 7 drivers for your Lifebook or Stylistic you should go to Windows Update from within Windows 7. For remaining yellow banged out devices you visit the support site (links below) and choose Windows 7 as your OS. Note that if you want to run Windows 7 x64 (which makes no sense as long as you have less than 4 GB of RAM), you have to remove the mark of the checkbox for “Show only supported operating systemes”. If there is no driver for Windows 7, try the Windows Vista driver.

I have succesefully installed all device drivers for Windows 7 x86 on Lifebook P1620 – but the Authentec fingerprint device is not working. It is detected and the driver is installed, but it is not recognized as a biometric device so that I cannot log in with a finger swipe. I guess that is what “limited support” is about :(

Fujitsu to add Windows 7 support for P1610 and P1620 Tablets

Perhaps you’re already running Windows 7 on your Fujitsu (Siemens) P1610 or P1620 Tablet PC. I for example have succesfully installed the x64-Bit version, but as RAM is limited to 2 GB, I see no value it that and will go back to x86 (32 bit) version these days as I want to reinstall to get a clean system ready for next Beta of Office 2010.

While looking for new drivers I found this document (PDF, 149 KB) which lists all the models Fujitsu is going to support if you install Windows 7 on it.

Good news: Following Tablet PCs are “supported”:

P1610, P1620, T4220.

Following Tablets are “fully supported”:

T1010, T5010, STYLISTIC ST6012

Being supported means, no yellow banged out devices with inbox drivers, drivers from Windows Update or drivers for Vista from Fujitsu website. Windows 7 x64 is “unsupported”, but it works, too. Even Sierra Wireless 3G on P1620. But using it with less than 4 GB of RAM makes no sense.

Being “fully supported” means systems are WHQL certified for Windows 7 and a complete set of drivers for Windows 7 is available.

Fujitsu promises BIOS updates for P1610, P1620 and T4220 for end of November. Stay tuned.

ENGLISH

Sometimes it’s not the big articles that hide great stuff. On Heise newsticker Ulrike Kuhlmann wrote a short notice about “technology to touch”, saying that T-Mobile shows a big, big touchscreen wall screen in Berlin at the IFA fair (consumer electronics show). Great toy for public places, fairs, company halls etc.

After the blogger panel with Robert Scoble I walked to the T-Mobile hall and had the opportunity to talk to Hans-Joachim Stolzmann, the head behind the touch wall screen from the “Mediafaktur” q-bus. They use publicly available software, setup infrared cameras behind the nine 2 meter wide and 1.5 meter high glasses, several beamer and a Mac Pro for computing.

Watch the small video (wmv file) here. Note that we talk in German. Sorry for the lousy sound, shot with Canon Ixus 80, no background noise cancellation configured.

Send an e-mail to sn(at)tablet-profi.com to get in touch with the Hans-Joachim.

DEUTSCH

Scoble: “iPhone took sexyness away from the Tablet PC”

Robert Scoble attended a blogger talk at IFA fair in Berlin yesterday (leading consumer electronicx fair) and I talked with him for some mintes after the panel. From the conversation:

Do you expect a Mac Tablet (or iTablet or whatever) later this year? There have been these patent filing news

“Yeah, there are rumors again and again, they have the technology, they have multi touch but it is not easy to bring ink to each application.” When saying that he didn’t look like “Hey I’m not gonna tell you that I have seen something but cannot tell anyone.”

Why isn’t Tablet yet mainstream?

“It’s the developers, they do all their stuff with the keyboard, many of them even don’t touch the mouse at all, they don’t think ink, even at Microsoft. And with the iPhone Apple took away a lot of the sexyness of the Tablet PC – multi touch and so on.”

The rest of the conversation wasn’t Tablet related.

Here a picture from the panel:
